International Day of Indigenous Peoples celebrates the rich cultures, histories, and contributions of indigenous peoples worldwide. It raises awareness about the challenges they face, such as the preservation of their lands, rights, and languages, and promotes the protection of their cultural heritage and rights.
We discuss (1) the role of environmental defenders in climate action, biocultural diversity and human rights protection in Colombia, Peru and beyond; (2) challenges they face including mining, floods, forest fires, drought or carbon piracy; and (3) gaps of their recognition in the UNFCCC process.
